LA – We’ve been working on grammar.  Ask your child to give you a synonym and antonym for: fast, glad and simple.

MATH – Subtract  54 376  –  38 559.  Then add to check your answer.  (It’s the fact family!)

SOCIALS – Chapter 1 TEST will be returned as soon as all students have written the test.  Tests are stored here at school in student folders so that they are available for parents/guardians for school meetings.

SCIENCE – Chapter 4 Test on Thursday, October 6th. Please start to review the vocab from the digestive and respiratory systems.  Vocabulary: cells, tissues, organs, body systems, digestion, nutrients, digestive process, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, colon, respiratory system, oxygen, trachea, lungs, diaphragm, inhale, exhale and carbon dioxide.  Two key diagrams are on page 89 and 93.

FRENCH – Working on a school booklet.

ART – New project next week.

PE – Working on fitness through 10 minute activity every morning and twice a week in PE class.  Distance running, indoor game skills, participation, effort, fair play and safety all contribute to the letter grade earned.

PLANNERS – Students should be bringing home their planners each day.  All work on our class homework board is to be copied into their planners even if they have finished in class. That way parents and guardians at home know what is going on.  If you could ask to see their planners and talk about their day it could benefit their learning.

Next week, as part of our Health and Career curriculum, the Hope & Area Transition Society (HATS) will be providing students with a Violence Prevention Program. HATS staff will be visiting our school and will be facilitating 4 forty five minute lessons in the classroom.

Have a great weekend!

Cheers!

LA – We’ve been working on grammar.  All students should know nouns, proper nouns, adjectives and verbs.

MATH – We had a pop quiz on Wednesday.  On most quizzes, students have a chance at a re-do to improve their mark.  However, they will often need to give up part of their lunch to go over the quiz or rewrite the new quiz.

SOCIALS Chapter 1 TEST on Wednesday September 28.  Vocabulary so far: diversity, ancestors, relief map, 5-Regions of Canada, culture, heritage, cultural origin, native land, national anthem, census, survey, Group of Seven, Emily Carr.  Students should review their definitions to prepare for the test.

That way parents and guardians at home know what is going on.  If you could ask to see their planners and talk about their day it could benefit their learning.

Thursday, September 22

We have a Social Studies Test next Wednesday the 28th of September.  Review the vocabulary to prepare for the test. There should be around a dozen words/concepts to know.  We finish the chapter tomorrow.  Monday will be a review day.

On a different note, paste this link in your address bar to go to a cool science website.  We used it today in class.               http://sciencenetlinks.com/interactives/systems.htm

More notes tomorrow.

Monday, September 19

Just a reminder that we have a French quiz on Wednesday about numbers up to 12 and colours.

Students all have several worksheets that cover these topics.

Friday, September 16

LA – Ask your child to name a few nouns and adjectives.  Use them in a sentence.

Their everyday homework is to read each day at home.  We had library today so most kids should have a book to take home.

MATH – Place Value. In the number 346 782:

• What digit is in the thousands place value?

• What is the value of the 7?

• Write out the number in expanded form using numbers and using base tens

Also, memorizing their timetables is a huge advantage in math.  Their everyday homework is to memorize their timetables so if they say they have nothing…

SCIENCE – Beginning chapter 4 with vocal so far; cells, tissues, organs, body systems, digestion and nutrients.  Look at the diagram on page 89 and know the basic steps of digestion.

SOCIALS – Chapter 1 up to page 8. Also know the 5 Regions of Canada.

FRENCH – Colours and numbers up to 12.

• What colour is rouge?  Juane?  Gris?  Noir?  Vert?

• What number is dix?  Sept?  Cinq?

ART – Nametags turned out fantastic! Bookmarks are almost complete.  A new project next week.

Please check out our classroom expectations.  It has been a great start but we can definitely improve in some areas.

Welcome to grade 5 in room 110!

This is the class online homework board. It is for parents and guardians as well as the students, although they all have personal agendas to help them remember their assignments. Reading daily and practicing their timetables is their daily homework and should be written in their agendas.

I usually make one post a week outlining the upcoming tests/homework, overdue assignments and sometimes goofy pics from the class.

Feel free to stop by or email me at doug.hoshowski@sd78.bc.ca if you have any concerns or questions.

Cheers!
