Friday, November 24

Happy Pro-D day!

LA – We have been working on full sentence answers in the novel. For example: What was the prince carrying when he appeared in Jemmy’s chamber?

The prince was carrying a wicker basket when he appeared in Jemmy’s chamber.

Or

The prince appeared in Jemmy’s chamber carrying a wicker basket.

There is always more than one way to answer in a full sentence but, student need to use part of the question in their answer. Students often write: He had a wicker basket.

I would write back: Who? When? Where?

Or sometime they write: he had a basket

Punctuation???

Proofreading will be part of every writing assignment from now on and will be necessary for students trying to achieve an extending mark.

MATH – 2-digit multiplication. Please have your child practice. Once they get, they get it. Use this file to help them remember the steps.

SCIENCE – We began a new unit on the skeletal and muscular systems.

SOCIALS – Chapter 3 in the text. Immigration to Canada.

FRENCH – Days of the week, months of the year, time. Can your child recite the days of the week? What is the French word for “day?”

A handout didn’t go home. The Hope Lions Club is holding a pancake breakfast with Olaf and Rudolph on Saturday, November 25 from 9-11 am at Silver Creek School. It is by donation for the Hope Holly Days.

On Saturday December 2, from 6-9 pm is the Hope Towing Santa Ride with Olaf and Rudolph. Start in Memorial Park. Ride tickets in exchange for non-perishable goods. Donations go towards Envision’s Full Cupboard.

Have a good long weekend! Cheers!

Friday, November 17

The students should all have their scores on the latest socials and science tests. Ask them how they did.

In language arts we are continuing on the novel, The Whipping Boy. Ask your child to explain what is happening in the novel. Why is Jemmy pretending to be the prince? Which outlaw is big and has smelly breath? Who do the boys meet in the forest?

We are writing full sentences that require proofreading. Many times the students forget capital letters or periods. Proofreading is necessary to demonstrate proficiency in writing.

We started a new booklet in French on the days of the week, months of the year and other related lengths of time. Can they tell you the days of the week? Can they sing it to the Adams Family theme song?

Other than that, please encourage your child to memorize their timetables. We start 2-digit multiplication next week and it will be immensely helpful if they don’t need to rely on a timetables chart for every single fact.

Have a great weekend! Cheers!

Tuesday, November 14

I hope everyone had a good long weekend!

This is a reminder of the chapter 5 science test tomorrow. The kids all have review crosswords to complete using the text book and/or their notes. If they want to write out flashcards instead of completing the crossword, that is fine with me.

Cheers!

LA – Ask your child why Jemmy is pretending to be the prince? Is the prince happy about it? Can they describe two ways the outlaws are different from each other?

MATH – Estimating by rounding. Ask your child to solve this problem.

Mr. H wants to sell 44 of his Hardy Boys book series. Baker’s Books has offered to buy them for $5 each. He estimates he will make about $2000. Is this a good estimate? Why or why not?

SOCIAL STUDIES – The chapter two test was today. The kids will know their scores next week.

SCIENCE – Chapter five test is on Wednesday next week. We’ll have a review on Tuesday. Know all bold words in the chapter.

FRENCH – New unit next week.

Wednesday, November 8

A reminder that we have two tests coming up!

Ttomorrow is the French quiz on the Halloween vocabulary. Chat noir, citrouille, crapaud, chaudron, squelette are some of the words from the unit.

Friday is the chapter five test in Science on the circulatory system and excretory system. They should be able to describe how the circulatory system collects oxygen and moves it around the body and how the blood helps remove wastes like carbon dioxide. To show a greater understanding they should use their science words such as: heart, blood vessels (3 kinds) blood, plasma, blood cells (3 kinds) membrane, kidneys and bladder. What other systems work with the circulatory system to keep you alive and healthy?

Cheers!

MATH – Multiplication of 2-digits by 1-digit. E.g. 47 x 5

SCIENCE – Your blood is made up of two parts. Ask your child to tell you what they are. What does every cell have that allows nutrients and oxygen in and lets out wastes like carbon dioxide? What are the messenger chemicals in your body called that your blood moves around?

SOCIAL STUDIES – Chapter two test on Friday, November 10. Students were instructed to take home their notes.

FRENCH – Halloween vocab test on Thursday next week. Ask your child to translate these French words: chat noir, fantôme, momie, chauve-souris, balai, chaudron, souris, squelete, araignée. We have one more class on Monday, but most have completed the booklet.

Ask your child what a full sentence answer would be for:

What was the prince carrying when he entered Jemmy’s chamber?

MATH – Multiplication. Ask your child the super fast, easy, shortcut method when multiplying numbers ending in zero. For example:

3 x 40 =

50 x 9 =

20 x 70 =

SCIENCE – Chapter five on the circulatory system. Ask your child about the three different types of blood vessels. How are they the same? How are they different? How many types of blood cells do we have in our body? Tell two things about each.

SOCIAL STUDIES – Our chapter two test will be next Friday. I will be telling the kids to take home their notes and/or the text for the weekend to review for the test. Don’t wait until the night before! We have looked at two of Canada’s three founding peoples. Ask your child which two and which one is left. They will get a review page on Wednesday next week to help prepare for the test on Friday.

FRENCH – Halloween booklet.

ART – Bookmarks that we will laminate.
