LA – 5-sentence paragraphs. Give your child topic and ask them to write a 5-sentence paragraph.

MATH – Reducing fractions. You can see below that 1/2 is equivalent to 2/4. But how to turn 2/4 into 1/2? By dividing the numerator (top number) and the denominator (bottom number) by the same number. The rule is whatever you do to the top, you do to the bottom.

2/4 = 1/2 because 2 ÷ 2 = 1 and 4 ÷ 2 = 2.

Ask your child to reduce 4/12, 15/20, 3/9.

SCIENCE – Our chapter 8 test is on Thursday next week. review term like natural resource, resource, environmental impact, biodegradable, ecosystem, conservation and the three R’s. Be able to answer the Check Your Understanding questions.

SOCIAL STUDIES – Chapter 5 is on government. The test will be Tuesday, March 5.

FRENCH – New unit next week. Today the students had a test on the weather. Today’s weather was, il fait soleil! Ask then to translate for you.

We skate on Monday afternoon from 1pm to 2 pm. If you have your own skates please bring them. All students and adults need to wear a helmet so if you have one, please bring it. If not, The school has helmets and the rec centre has skates, all at no cost. This is a free afternoon skate. I recommend that students bring mitts or gloves. Sometimes kids get cold. We will leave here about 12:30 and walk back in time for the bus.

Have a great weekend! Cheers!

Sentences #2, 3 and 4 give details or information about the _________ of the paragraph.

Sentence #5 is called the ___________ sentence. It lets the __________ know that the author is finished talking about the topic.

MATH – Fractions. We had a quiz which will be returned on Tuesday. Ask your child to solve 1/5 + 2/5, 3/4 + 2/20, 4/5 – 1/3 and finally 2/5 + 1/8.

SCIENCE – Chapter 8 on resources. Why does technology make it hard to tell what resources that some products are made from? E.g. A plastic water bottle or polyester clothing.

We go skating on Monday, February 26 from 1- 2 pm. If you have your own skates and helmet, please use them. If you don’t, we can use the ones at the rink at no cost. Parents and guardians who would like to come and skate with the class (and help ties skates, heh heh) are welcome to attend. All must wear helmets on the ice. I recommend that students bring coats, gloves or mitts. It does get a little cold.

Have a great weekend! Cheers!

MATH – Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. First of all, can your child explain what a fraction is? Do they know which number is the numerator and the denominator and what those numbers mean? (in a picture?) Can they show you how to add 1/3 + 1/5 ? Can they show you how to add 2/10 + 1/5 by doing half the work as the previous example?

LA – Rhyming poems. Have your child explain how an AABB rhyme pattern is different from an ABAB or a ABCB pattern.

MATH – Ask your child what the best unit of measurement would be for:

-the width of a slice of bread, distance to Chilliwack, length of a text book, length of the school field

We start a unit on fractions next week.

SCIENCE – New unit on resources. Ask your child where everything we need to survive comes from.

SOCIALS – Maps of British Columbia. Transferring information from a map is often tricky for kids. Look at a map of BC and ask where Hope is located. What river is it near? Can they find Shuswap Lake or Okanagan Lake? How about our capital city, Victoria? What territory is next to BC and Alaska?

FRENCH – New unit next week.

ART – Some excellent Line Landscape projects!

Lately, there have been some unkind comments made at school and online. Please talk to your child about treating each other with kindness and respect. The students in the class are usually great, but sometimes reminders are helpful. My rule of thumb is, if you wouldn’t say it to your grandma, don’t say it at all.

Have a good weekend! Cheers!
