LA – We started a new novel, Holes, and are working on answering questions using full sentences. For example:

Q: How many cots were in Stanley’s tent?

A: There were seven cots in Stanley’s tent.

Sometimes kids answer with: There were seven.

But I ask, seven what? Where were these seven things?

And less often kids will answer with: there were seven

They need to proofread/edit their work to correct missing capital letters and periods.
