Week ending May 3

LA – Focus on proofreading written work. The novel questions often contain missing capitals and periods or are not full sentence answers. A full sentence answer will make the question obvious.

Example:

Q. Why were the showers only four minutes long?

A. The showers were only four minutes long because there was a scarcity of water.

This answer could be written slightly differently, but the information clearly answers the question. If your child answered: Because there wasn’t much water, that is correct, but it is not a full sentence. The question could have been, Why did Stanley drink so much root beer?

MATH – Converting fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions. Ask your child to convert:

4/10, 18/100, 7/100,

0.28, 0.09, 35.6

SCIENCE – Chapter nine on resources.

SOCIAL STUDIES – Chapter six in the text.

FRENCH – New unit on Monday.

The art show is Thursday this week from 5-7pm in the gym. Please drop by if you have a chance. Kids should be accompanied by an adult.

Congratulations to Alice for being Fitness kid of the month!

Have a great rest of your weekend! Cheers!

Tuesday, April 30

LA – We started a new novel, Holes, and are working on answering questions using full sentences. For example:

Q: How many cots were in Stanley’s tent?

A: There were seven cots in Stanley’s tent.

Sometimes kids answer with: There were seven.

But I ask, seven what? Where were these seven things?

And less often kids will answer with: there were seven

They need to proofread/edit their work to correct missing capital letters and periods.

MATH – Fractions to decimals. Ask your child to convert: 3/10, 56/100, 2/100, 12/10

SCIENCE – Chapter nine on resources. We have looked at salmon, trees and next up is water and the water cycle.

SOCIALS – Chapter six on Indigenous government.

ART – Some beautiful pointillism art projects! A few of them will be displayed at the Art Show on Thursday next week. Please drop by between from 5 – 7 pm to view some really cool art work.

A reminder that we swim on Thursday. There is no cost for the swim. Please send a towel with your child. Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather as we walk both ways.

Tuesday next week we have the chapter 5 socials test on government in Canada. The students have a review crossword from today and notes from Thursday. They need to know how many levels of government we have in Canada. What are the people called at each level? (Government people in general?) How do they get their jobs? Where do they meet? What do they do? Are there any rules to follow in a country?

Wednesday is Fit Kids Day! If your child is a Fit Kid coach they will need gym strip and proper footwear. It’s a good idea to bring water. It is a tiring day for the coaches, but the younger kids love it!

Term two is officially over and report cards, er, excuse me, learning updates, will be available on Thursday. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s progress.

Have a great weekend! Cheers!
